Week 1: General meeting and Temescal Canyon Hike

Hello all!

We are excited to begin this quarter with many exciting events, such as a Yosemite Lunar Rainbow trip. To follow will be several fun-packed outings and workshops, and an awesome bonfire to end the quarter!

This week, we have several things we’d like to share. Firstly, this week on Friday, we have a general meeting, followed immediately by a Temescal Canyon hike. Secondly, we are calling for submissions for an exhibition in the Kerckhoff Art Gallery for those interested. Thirdly, we will be going to Yosemite National Park next weekend and have a small number of spots available, see details below!

1. GENERAL MEETING
Time: 3:45 – 4:45 PM, Friday, April 4, 2014
Location: Ackerman 3517
Come meet the officers, other members, and learn about the exciting events we have planned for this quarter! The meeting will also include a brief summary of the events from Fall / Winter 2014 so you can get a taste of what we have accomplished so far this year. We are also selling t-shirts for $15! After the meeting, we will be going to…

TEMESCAL CANYON HIKING TRIP
Time: End of meeting – 9 PM, Friday, April 4, 2014
Location: Temescal Canyon Park, Los Angeles, CA
This is a great opportunity to bond with other officers and members, as well as shoot some photos with your camera. We held this event during Fall Quarter as well, and it was a massive success! It’s how many of our most involved photo club members got started. Items you should bring include: snacks, WATER, comfortable shoes, a flashlight, and your camera gear. The bus leaves UCLA at around 5:15. Sunset is around 7:15, so we will have ample time to make our way up the hills. Contact Jeff Lewis or Stanley Wu for further details.

2. KERCKHOFF ART GALLERY – CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Time: All of Week 3, April 13 – 18, 2014
We will be displaying photograph submissions from Photo Club members for all of UCLA to see. You’ll also be able to put on your resume that you’ve been in a real, curated art gallery! If you are interested, then please submit up to TWO digital photographs to photoclubatucla@gmail.com (.jpg only, no RAW or similar files). For each photo submitted, please bring $10 to the general meeting on Friday to cover printing and matting costs (that means $20 for two photo submissions). All submissions and payments MUST be in by Friday night.

For each photo, please include a 100-word maximum description (i.e. title, how you took the photo, etc.). The long side of your photo must be AT LEAST 3000 pixels in terms of resolution, since we will be printing all photos at 12” x 18”.

If you cannot pay at the general meeting, contact Johnny Wang if you live in the apartments or Stanley Wu if you live in the dorms, and we will arrange payment pickup times.

3. YOSEMITE LUNAR RAINBOW TRIP
Time: Friday, April 11, 2014 – early Monday morning, April 14, 2014 (more details below)
Location: Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Village, CA
During the weekend of April 11, there will be a high chance of seeing “moonbows”, or rainbows lit by the moonlight, on Yosemite Falls. The moonbow will be at its strongest during the early hours of Tuesday, but one car will definitely be returning by 10am Monday morning. The expected cost of this trip is approximately $85, which covers gas, car rentals, lodging for the first night (since camping will be impossible to find), and campground usage for the second (and possibly third) night. Spots are limited, so if you are interested, then contact Jeff Lewis or Johnny Wang ASAP. Be sure to also let us know whether you want to return to UCLA early Monday morning OR early Tuesday morning. If you want to skip class to see the best moonbow possible, we aren’t holding you back.
